Atlantis, Western Cape, South Africa - From a volunteer cleaner at a local radio station to a respected media figure, Peter Miller's story is one of unwavering dedication, faith, and a deep-seated passion for community broadcasting. His journey is a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have, rising through the ranks to not only shape the airwaves but also to create a platform for community voices to be heard.
Miller's career in media began with a simple yet profound desire to reach more people with a message of hope. A full-time evangelist traveling throughout the Western Cape, he saw the potential of radio as a powerful tool for outreach. This led him to Radio Atlantis, a community station established on September 1, 1995, with a mission to empower and inform the local population. "I thought, why don't I join the radio station?" Miller recalls. In late 1997, he took that leap of faith and became a volunteer.
His initial role was far from the glamorous world of broadcasting. "I started there as a cleaner, as a sweeper, cleaning the boardroom, cleaning the offices, cleaning the studios," he says. But for Miller, it was a foot in the door, an opportunity to learn and grow. His passion and work ethic did not go unnoticed. He soon found himself answering telephones and doing reception work, immersing himself in the station's daily operations.
Miller's deep-seated faith played a pivotal role in his journey. He started with morning devotions, his first on-air experience that would set the stage for his future in broadcasting. "That was my first contact doing morning devotions on the breakfast show," he remembers. His five-minute segments became a staple, and his voice began to resonate with the listeners of Radio Atlantis, an area that includes Atlantis, Mamre, Witsand, and other surrounding farming communities on the West Coast.
His role at the station continued to evolve. He became a compiler, preparing shows for other presenters, and then learned the technical side of broadcasting, from operating the control board to presenting his own programs. A significant turning point came when a pastor from the AFM Church asked him to minister on-air when a scheduled preacher didn't show up. "Since that morning, it started to just grow and grow and grow, and my voice became popular on Radio Atlantis," he says.
This growing influence led to his appointment as the first religious coordinator at the station, where he established a religious board that worked with ministers and spiritual leaders from various denominations across Atlantis and surrounding areas. His dedication to community engagement and his natural leadership abilities were evident.
In 1999, his commitment to the station deepened as he took on the role of caretaker for three years, ensuring the station remained on the air overnight. He would manually run the station with CDs before the advent of digital programming.
After leaving Radio Atlantis in 2005 to focus on his ministry on the West Coast, his passion for radio drew him back. He joined Radio West Coast, a station with a mission to represent the diversity of its community and promote its development. There, he hosted a social program called "Oasis" and was eventually elected as the operational director. In this role, he coordinated religious programs and handled marketing and promotion.
Miller's journey also led him to television. In 2019, he became a presenter and broadcaster for Kruiskyk TV, a South African Christian television channel dedicated to spreading messages of hope and faith.
In the same year, driven by a desire to create something of his own, Miller sold his marquee tents and invested in a camera and equipment to launch "Atlantis Alive." What started as a social media broadcast on Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok has become a vital platform for the Atlantis community. "I decided I want to do something for myself," he explains. Today, he and his wife are the directors of Atlantis Alive, with Peter as the founder.
Through Atlantis Alive, Miller continues to serve communities, providing a platform for local news, sports, and stories that often go unheard. " We had a wonderful time to use the airwaves and to make a difference in the lives of many people and to reach the communities," he reflects on his career.
Peter Miller's story is a remarkable example of how passion, perseverance, and a commitment to serving others can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career. From humble beginnings as a volunteer cleaner to becoming a media pioneer in his own right, his journey is an inspiration to all who dare to dream and work towards a better future for their community. He continues to call on aspiring journalists, news reporters, and volunteers to join him in his mission to uplift and inform through the power of media.
